Question: What motivates you to go to the gym each day?
A: “Training just makes me feel good. I find joy and satisfaction from it.”
Question: What is your biggest fitness accomplishment?
A: “As a fitness expert, I have consulted with professional athletes and sporting teams such as the Timberwolves, Vikings, and Colts. At age 55, I can still run under a 7-minute mile pace and I can lift with the best of them. To be physically fit at my age is a huge accomplishment.”
Question: What is a physical challenge you have had to overcome?
A: “I am aware I have limited range of motion. Although I have not overcome this physical challenge completely, I do work on it every day and I have made significant gains in my mobility and stability; allowing me to continue on as a high-level fitness trainer.”
Question: What is your favorite thing about training others?
A: “Helping them overcome their physical and mental limitations, and seeing them succeed.”
Question: How do you encourage your kids to be physically active?
A: “By being active with them and being 100% involved. Leading by example is key.”
Question: What sport or physical activity was your favorite growing up?
A: “Basketball. I had a scholarship to Villanova, but I decided to stay home due to a family matter. It turned me onto running. I needed to go to a local state college, so I began running and ultimately received a scholarship to run track at Indiana University. I was a three-time All-American athlete and Steeplechase winner. Even to this day, I enjoy running.”
Question: What fitness motto do you live by?
A: “Don’t just participate in life, go get it. Stand out and be the best version of you.”
Question: How has fitness impacted your life?
A: “Growing up, it saved my life in many ways. Today, it keeps me healthy, and I can lead by example with my kids.”
Question: How do you switch up your routine so you don’t get bored?
A: “I never get bored. I am always researching and changing things up on a daily basis. You can’t get bored with me – you just got to be able to keep up.”
Question: After a long week of training hard, how do you like to recover?
A: “Sleep and a massage always come high on the list!”
Question: On vacation, how do you stay on track with diet and exercise?
A: “Simple. I workout daily. I don’t drink alcohol or soda and I eat healthy.”
Question: Where are you from?
A: “Bloomington, Indiana now in Minnesota.”
Question: What’s your education background?
A: “Indiana University, BS.”
Question: What process did you go through to become a trainer?
A: “Evidence-based training. Believe in the science of training. Must also be inspiring to hit on the art. Failure is part of success. Most important zone is zone 1. Have to have periodization because if everything is hard, then it all becomes average.”
Question: What certifications do you have?
A: “American College of Sports Medicine, ACSM.”
Question: What is your training style?
A: “Challenging and motivating. Make sure you do more than you think you can. How fit you are has more to do with how well you recover. Cardio + Strength, BOTH. Big believer in it.”
Question: What’s your favorite exercise?
A: “Squats – full body, cardiovascular training, and running.”
Question: What pumps you up?
A: “The experience as well as give and take. Working with others. Being in the moment. Nothing else matters.”
Question: What do you do when you’re not training?
A: “Regeneration. Kids and family.”
Question: What’s your favorite snack?
A: “Dark chocolate.”
Question: What advice would you give someone who is just starting out their fitness journey?
A: “You have to let your body change. You can’t expect it to happen overnight. The more you allow it to change, you’ll be able to survive it, enjoy it, and conquer it. A lot of people start too hard. Be in a community or system that fosters you to keep going. Never to quit. Sometimes failure is part of success.”
