Founded in 1975 with the launch of the Nordic Ski Machine, NordicTrack revolutionised the fitness world. Designed to replicate the motion of cross-country skiing, it was one of the first scientifically engineered home training solutions. This innovation not only launched the brand but helped popularise the idea that effective exercise could take place outside the gym or professional environment. Over the decades, NordicTrack has continued to build on that legacy, evolving from a simple wooden machine into a global leader in connected fitness equipment.
NordicTrack is best known for its innovations in home fitness. Its history has been defined by major milestones: the Ski Machine of the 1970s, the introduction of incline technology in the 1980s and 90s, and the integration of immersive digital training through iFIT in the 2010s. Today, the brand continues to lead the way by combining cutting-edge engineering with revolutionary features such as SmartAdjust™, ActivePulse™ and AI-powered coaching. Together, these innovations have kept NordicTrack at the forefront of fitness for five decades.
FROM THE FROZEN HEARTLAND OF MINNESOTA TO THE SUMMIT OF GLOBAL FITNESS
It all began in 1975, in a garage in Edina, Minnesota. Edward Pauls, a passionate inventor, was looking for a way to train for cross-country ski races even when there was no snow on the ground. He created the very first NordicTrack ski simulator.
What began as a clever invention for elite athletes became a revolution: the world’s most effective full-body movement for cardio and muscle conditioning was now available in people’s living rooms.
By the 1980s, the Nordic Ski Machine was everywhere: in living rooms, sports clubs and television adverts. Consumers trusted it for its effectiveness, but also for its durability and rigorous sport-science-based design. At the same time, fitness culture was booming: aerobics, jogging and home workouts were growing rapidly. NordicTrack had become far more than a company – it was a symbol of domestic innovation and a marker of personal commitment to health and wellbeing.
50 YEARS OF UNCOMPROMISING INNOVATION
Since that iconic first ski simulator, NordicTrack has never stopped pushing the boundaries of engineering. Our mission has remained unchanged: to transform your training experience, making it more immersive, more effective and more motivating.
The early 1990s marked the peak of the Ski Machine. NordicTrack was exploring new formats for strength and cardio training. In 1998, ICON Health & Fitness acquired NordicTrack, marking a decisive turning point. Under ICON’s direction, the brand’s identity evolved to embrace a broader vision of connected, technology-driven cardio equipment, laying the foundations for its future dominance in the treadmill and elliptical trainer market.
Thanks to significant investment in R&D, NordicTrack became the leader in motorised treadmills, ellipticals and exercise bikes throughout the 2000s. It was the decade in which incline and decline technology became a brand hallmark, allowing users to safely replicate outdoor training – hills and descents – at home. It was also the era in which iFIT began to take shape through training cards and interactive chips, laying the groundwork for the connected age.
THE IFIT EXPERIENCE: A WORLD OF POSSIBILITIES
We believe training should never be a solitary chore. With iFIT, NordicTrack equipment becomes your window to the world.
Whether you want to run along the white sandy beaches of Thailand, climb the legendary mountain passes of the Tour de France or take a yoga class in Paris, our certified coaches are with you every step of the way. You’re not just moving – you’re travelling.
Today, innovation has become synonymous with personalisation. NordicTrack has introduced SmartAdjust™, which learns from your sessions to fine-tune intensity, and ActivePulse™, which uses your real-time heart rate to keep you in your optimal training zone. The launch of AI Coach goes even further, offering adaptive programmes that evolve with your performance and goals.
To celebrate its 50th anniversary, NordicTrack unveiled the Ultra. This collection redefines luxury and performance with premium materials (wood and metal) and backlit consoles. The headline innovation of this range is the introduction of the Pilates Reformer. For the first time, the elegance of Pilates meets the power of NordicTrack technology. From the Ultra 1 to the Ultra 3, these machines embody NordicTrack’s mission: to make training smarter, more complete and more inspiring for every generation.

ENGINEERING YOU CAN TRUST: TESTING AND TÜV CERTIFICATION
Beyond software innovation, mechanical reliability remains the cornerstone of NordicTrack. Every new model undergoes rigorous testing protocols before it reaches the market:
● Extreme endurance testing: motors are pushed to their limits for thousands of hours without interruption.
● Load simulation: treadmills and bikes are subjected to repeated stress tests simulating years of intensive use by elite athletes.
This commitment to quality is validated by TÜV SÜD certification – the world’s most stringent German testing authority. Bearing the TÜV mark means our equipment meets Europe’s strictest safety and performance standards. For the user, it’s the assurance of a stable, safe machine built to last a decade, not just a few seasons.
