KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Expert-led workouts are designed and guided by trainers with real fitness or health credentials, not just filmed content.
  • Structured, purposeful training programs are linked to lower injury rates than high-volume training without a plan.
  • iFIT trainer Tommy Rivs holds a Doctorate Degree in Physical Therapy and leads two series: Rivs Run Club and Joy of Running.
  • Rivs Run Club is a 30-workout treadmill series across California, Oregon, and New Zealand with no fixed schedule.
  • Joy of Running is a three-part progressive series built to make running feel sustainable, moving from Sardinia through California to Oregon.

Anyone can film themselves doing a workout. Fewer people can tell you why that workout is built the way it is, what it's protecting your knees from, or how to adjust it when your body isn't cooperating that day. That difference is the whole case for expert-led training, and it's easy to miss until you've trained both ways.

What Makes a Workout Actually Expert-Led

A trainer's credential isn't a formality. Some hold a current NCCA-accredited certification, the credential most major gyms and health clubs require or prefer because it reflects training in evidence-based program design. [1] Others bring advanced degrees, in fields like physical therapy or exercise physiology, backed by years of formal clinical education in how the body moves, heals, and adapts. A workout video with no coach behind it doesn't carry that same structured expertise, no matter how well produced it is.

The stakes are real, too. Research shows that somewhere between 20% and 80% of runners deal with an injury that costs them training time, and the running world has increasingly landed on the same conclusion: a structured, purposeful program consistently beats a high-volume one with no plan behind it. [2] Expert-led training means someone already thought through the part where you get hurt, so you don't have to find out the hard way.

Trainer Spotlight: Tommy Rivs

Tommy Rivs Puzey holds a Doctorate Degree in Physical Therapy from Northern Arizona University and is a Licensed Massage Therapist. [3] He is also a professional endurance athlete who returned to competitive marathon running after a serious 2020 cancer diagnosis, running the Boston Marathon in 2022.

That's the person leading the workouts in Rivs Run Club and Joy of Running.

Inside Rivs Run Club

Rivs Run Club is a 30-workout treadmill series that moves through California, Oregon, and New Zealand, one guided run at a time. The series opens in the redwoods around Mendocino and Laguna Point in Northern California, with a beginner-friendly walk-to-run progression before it moves into Oregon and then New Zealand. There's no season structure to track and no pace you're required to hit. Tommy sets the rhythm, one workout a week is the pattern most people settle into, and the run itself does the rest.

What makes this different from a generic running video is what happens the moment Tommy changes something. When he calls out a climb or eases into a cooldown, the treadmill adjusts speed and incline to match what he's doing in real time. His coaching and the machine's response happen together, which is the entire point of pairing NordicTrack hardware with iFIT. The equipment gives you the range to climb, descend, and change pace. iFIT gives that range something worth responding to.

Inside Joy of Running

Joy of Running is Tommy's other iFIT series, a three-part progressive running program built for people who want running to feel sustainable, not something to survive. [4]

Part 1: Sardinia is the starting point for anyone brand new to running. Across 20 workouts along Sardinia's coastal paths and historic towns, Tommy blends walking and running intervals that gradually extend until the final workout, a continuous 30-minute run. [4]

Part 2 moves to Northern California's coastline, split across two 10-workout installments. Part 2: Redwoods runs through Muir Woods with short, two-minute foundation intervals built to dial in pacing and form, then Part 2: California Coast pushes past Chimney Rock, Drake's Beach, and Bodega Bay, stretching running segments to six to eight minutes. [4]

The newest installment, Part 3: Oregon, moves into the Pacific Northwest, through Tumalo Falls, Cape Kiwanda, Ecola State Park, Cascade Head, and remote alpine forest trails, including a run out to Sahalie Falls. This installment shifts the focus toward building a durable aerobic base rather than hitting specific milestones, and it's built to work as a standalone entry point, not just a continuation of Parts 1 and 2. [4]

The same trainer-to-machine connection runs through every part of the series. As the terrain shifts between a flat coastal stretch and a climbing forest trail, the treadmill adjusts to match it, so the walk-run intervals Tommy calls out land at the intensity they're actually meant to.

NordicTrack Commercial 2450 Treadmill

The Commercial 2450 Treadmill is built for exactly this kind of guided running, with RunFlex cushioning and a 24-inch HD touchscreen that keeps Tommy's coaching front and center through every workout in the series.

NordicTrack X24 Treadmill

For runs that lean harder into climbing terrain, the X24 Treadmill offers a -6% to 40% incline and decline range, wide enough that a trainer-led hill session actually feels like one.

Why the Coach Matters More Than the Content

It's tempting to think of a trainer-led workout as just nicer scenery with a person talking over it. That undersells what's actually happening. The workout exists because someone with a real training background built it to get you somewhere specific, safely, and adjusted it when it needed adjusting. That's not something a generic workout video can replicate no matter how good the footage looks.

This matters most when your training needs to hold up outside the workout itself, when a hike, a trip, or an ordinary demanding week asks something of you that you didn't train for on purpose. A program built by someone who actually understands injury, recovery, and progression is more likely to have you ready for that than one that was never built by anyone qualified to build it.
